Why would a clothing brand release an album?
In this episode of The Unfolding Thought Podcast, Eric Pratum talks with Jason Cevera, co-founder and creative director of HalfGenius and founder of Pickles Apparel, about brand storytelling, creative experimentation, and turning a personal joke into a business.
Jason’s first agency client was Gucci. He explains how a conversation on a shuttle at South by Southwest led to a relationship, a project, and work he and his wife managed from their dining room table. His Canon activation at the Little League World Series offers another example: giving people something they already wanted to do created an opportunity to introduce them to the products.
Then his kids started calling him Mr. Pickles. Looking for a hat became an apparel project, and a generic Shopify storefront eventually felt too limited for the ideas he wanted to explore. He was learning e-commerce on his own account, instead of figuring it out for a paying client in real time. Jason decided to “go unhinged,” developing characters and the “Brine Unconscious,” a strange world of pickles wondering what exists outside their jar.
The experiment grew into music, with help from AI tools and musicians. Jason explains why someone might spend twenty minutes with a brand through an album, how Spotify connects to his merchandise, and where influencers and pickle festivals fit into his plans. These are experiments he is developing as he learns what connects with an audience.
We also discuss what owning a product business has taught him about his agency clients, and why AI fits a creative director’s existing work: developing an idea, explaining what it should become, and making decisions along the way. Jason describes using it to explore business plans, visuals, and new creative projects. He also describes building his first game and turning Mr. Pickles into a character he could 3D-print.
